When To Replace Your Appliance?

Here are three common signs that hint it may be time to replace your appliance:

  • Age: The age of your appliance is a significant factor in determining whether to repair or place it. Most appliances have a lifespan of 10-15 years, after this time frame, they tend to begin wearing out and breaking down frequently.
  • Frequent Breakdowns: If your appliance is frequently breaking down, it may be time to replace it. Frequent repairs can be costly and may not solve the underlying problem.
  • Cost of Repairs: The cost of repairing your appliance can sometimes be higher than the cost of replacing it. If repairs cost more than 50% of the appliance’s value, it may be more cost-effective to replace it.

Do I Repair Or Replace My Appliance?

We’re going to cover some of the common problems that occur in refrigerators, dryers, and dishwashers that most often than not, can be easily repaired. It is important to note that while the occasional repair may be worth the money, when many components fail it is a sign that the appliance as a whole is breaking down. In this case, it makes more sense to replace your home appliance rather than replacing appliance parts or undergoing frequent repairs.

Refrigerator

It's no laughing matter when you have an issue with your refrigerator. Being one of the most important kitchen appliances, the refrigerator is the sole device that keeps your food cool and fresh. While there are a variety of reasons why your refrigerator may not be performing properly, we are going to help you figure out if your major appliance needs repair services or if you need a new unit altogether.

When Should You Repair Your Refrigerator?

First and foremost, determine if the equipment is worth fixing. Replacement is a preferable alternative if it is extremely old and may require frequent servicing, or if the cost of repairs is close to or higher than the cost of a newer model with higher efficiency. Here are several signs that your refrigerator needs to be repaired:

  • Temperature: The heat in your refrigerator should be below 40°F and below 0°F in the freezer. If the unit isn't cooling correctly, it might be due to an issue with the thermostat, coils, airflow, or vent. A refrigerant leak might also be to blame.
  • Noises: Noises coming from the rear of the refrigerator might indicate a problem with the condenser fan, compressors, or defrost timer. A faulty fan within the fridge might be the source of the noise. A rattling drain pan might be the source of the noise if it's coming from the bottom.
  • Doors Not Sealing: Cool air will leak if the door does not seal correctly, causing the refrigerator to operate inefficiently. Food rotting is also a worry. Professionals can fix door seals rather than replace the complete device.
  • Water/Ice: If your refrigerator's water dispenser or ice maker isn't working, the components related to these systems may be fixed or changed. You may prevent repairs (and perhaps increase the life of your refrigerator) by avoiding overloading it, which lessens the strain just on the compressor. It's also a good idea to avoid blocking air vents. To preserve efficiency, wipe the entrance gaskets clear on a regular basis & vacuum the fridge coil at the bottom.

Dryer

Should you fix or replace your damaged clothes dryer? There are various things to think about. If you can perform a simple repair for a low cost, that's usually your best option; but whether you're looking at just a few hundred dollars in dryer repairs, you'll need to figure out what was going to be more expensive over time. It's a good rule of thumb to replace your dryer completely if it's close to ten years old, particularly if the repair estimate is excessive. The majority of dryers have a life expectancy of 10 to 15 years.

When Should You Repair Your Dryer?

  • Temperature: Your dryer should be producing heat and drying clothes properly. If it is not, there could be a problem with the thermostat, heating element, or airflow that may need repairs.
  • Drum: If the drum is not spinning or is shaking excessively, it could be due to a worn belt or faulty motor.
  • Door: If the dryer door is not closing properly or is difficult to open, it could be due to a faulty door switch or latch.
  • Burning Smell/Smoke: If the dryer is producing a burning smell or emitting smoke, it could be due to a link buildup or a faulty heating element.
  • Leaking: If the dryer is leaking water or causing water damage to the surrounding area, it could be due to a faulty water inlet valve or a clogged drain hose.

Dishwasher

When considering whether to replace or repair your dishwasher, there are two major aspects to consider: the availability of replacements and the age of the appliance. This information will assist you in deciding which choice is best for your business. Dishwashers normally last ten years, although Consumer Reports estimates that roughly 30% of modern dishwashers need repair within the first 5 years.

When Should You Repair Your Dishwasher?

  • Drainage: If the dishwasher is not draining properly, it could be due to a clogged drain, hose, pump, or filter.
  • Noises: Unusual or loud noises during operation can indicate a problem with the motor, pump, or spray arm.
  • Cleaning: If the dishes are not getting cleaned properly, it could be due to a clogged spray arm, malfunctioning wash motor, or faulty detergent dispenser.
  • Odor: If the dishwasher is emitting a foul odor, it could be due to food debris buildup inside the dishwasher or filter.
